Chipotle Hot Sauce Recipe

Using a chipotle hot sauce recipe is a good way to spice up your favorite meals, snacks, or appetizers. You can follow the recipe step by step or alter it by adding your own secret ingredients, more spice, or thickening agents, such as cornstarch or flour so that the sauce sticks to the food and combines the flavors while cooking.

Nice and Easy

A hot sauce recipe with chipotle is relatively simple to make and requires very few ingredients. For this first recipe, all you need is a tablespoon each of honey and chipotle pepper puree, a cup of red wine vinegar, half a teaspoon of salt, and two tablespoons of Dijon mustard. Combine all of these items in a small bowl and whisk together to blend. You can then use it as a marinade for meat, serve some on the side of your tater tots, or offer it as a dip with fried or grilled skin-on chicken wings. If you opt not to use the sauce right away, it can be stored for several months in an air tight container.

More Adventuruous

This chipotle hot sauce recipe involves a few more ingredients and a few more steps, making it more time consuming but still fairly easy to put together. The items needed to complete this recipe are:

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of chipotle pepper puree or more if you like it really spicy
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons ancho chile powder
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • Salt and ground pepper to taste
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces

Using a whisk, mix the mustard, vinegar, chipotle puree, oil, and honey in a medium size bowl and sprinkle with the salt and pepper so as to season the sauce.

Place a large pot or skillet on top of your grill and melt the butter before adding the above mixture to the pan. Allow the sauce to boil and then add the ancho chile powder and another dash more of salt. Remove from heat, let cool, and transfer to a bottle or condiment cup. This particular recipe works best with grilled items and is nicely complemented by a cool, blue cheese-yogurt dip.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

If you enjoy having a four alarm fire in your mouth, then your taste buds are going to love this recipe. A hot and spicy Mexican sauce, this recipe calls for:

  • 5 or 6 whole chipotle peppers (it’s the seeds that make it so spicy), stems removed
  • 4 to 6 teaspoons of chile powder
  • One-third cup of dark corn syrup
  • One-third cup of strong coffee
  • A quarter cup of ketchup
  • A quarter cup of cider vinegar
  • A quarter cup of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons of mustard
  • A tablespoon of corn oil
  • Half a teaspoon of salt

Once you have gathered everything you need, place all of the ingredients into a large pot and heat them until the mixture starts to boil. Next, lower the flame and simmer the combined items for 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, put the contents of the pot into a blender and blend on high until a thin, but not too watery, texture forms.

Each chipotle hot sauce recipe mentioned is easy and quick to make, providing a strong or subtle flavor to your featured dish. You can serve the sauce on special occasions to impress guests, use it in your everyday cooking, or bottle it up and share it with friends and neighbors. However you use your hot sauce, just be sure to start mild and work your way up to the extra spicy recipes.
